Old Perithia

The Ano Perithia or Old Perithia is a graphical village in north Corfu, built on 450 metres high on the slopes of mountain Pantoktator, 8 km far from Kassiopi. There are a lot of rumours about the provenance of the villages name from “ peri-thea” which mean “seen from the mountains around it”. This village is known from 300 B.C. when a destroyable tsounami hit the coast of the island. Those who survived looked up for a safer piece of land far away from the sea.

History

On the 14th century Corfiots sufferd from pirates invasions and found refuge on the village far away from the sea-side. On the beginnig of 20th century the locals started to live only three months a year, only summer time, on the village. As time went by it became a touristic area with a lot of architecture buildings (up to 130 made of stone). There are also many impressive churches. Ano Perithia is called to be a Historical Monument. The beauty and the architecture of the area travel visitors back to the Venetian years.
